Implementing SAP EHS in current Economic Scenario... Seeing Opportunity in Difficult Period !!!

Dear Friends,

As is evident from the market, majority of companies seeing to expand their ERP portfolio with Sustainability footprint, some focusing on entirely new implementations, some on Upgrade and some on the consolidation of their existing systems and recreating their solution landscape. So transitioning existing SAP systems with EHS portfolio has always been revolutionary, which takes entire Compliance process to next level, to a level where regulatory information is delivered more quickly, more informed decisions are made and ultimately an increased compliance and less violations is achieved. The trick is doing right with less resources and money. These transformations are almost always painful nonetheless owing to the fact that majority of the regulations or legal requirements are on continuous change.  Further many Small and Mid sized organizations find it difficult to fully understood the legalities and are in the process of developing their own work processes.

There’s no value and no reason to reinvent the wheel i.e., Business Processes. Frankly, most everything a Company needs or want in regard to a Sustainability implementation has already been done, and done well, by Sector Specific SAP Best Practices. A Company job can be much simpler and certainly less risky because of them. This is often the case with Mid Sized Enterprises, when it comes to Large Companies the implementation spans across multiple years and multiple milestones.  Expanding the existing ERP portfolio with EHS Suite is less often the innovative game, for many has become the required investment necessarily to merely re-level the playing fields. Often Business follows the Software while it is implemented so it’s often useful to implement the best practices and level the ground to meet the competition and then innovate as the days pass to achieve operational efficiency - this will reduce the risk, implement with less resources and moreover reduce the implementation cost.

SAP EH&S Learning Thread

Dear Friends,

Few days back I got a mail asking if I take a step by step sessions on how to get into SAP EHS coverinpg important concepts and information. This thread is for that purpose. I will be periodically updating this thread with new information.

Thanks
jak

Learning EH&S – Session 1: What is Specification Database ?

Specification is the central database for EH&S. These data often referred to as Product data. This data includes regulations and laws concerning the products and ingredients. Example of specificaiton data include handling requirements, storage requirements and transport requirements, physical chemical characteristics, safety information and hazardous information. These specifications data are of different types based on the nature of the data they handle and also based on their close association with sub modules of EH&S like Hazard – related to Industrial Hygiene and safety, Waste Code – Related to Waste Management, Dangerous Goods Classification – Related to Dangeorous Goods Management and Substance – for Product Safety. So we can use the same concept to separate the specification database into Different specification Categories based on the broad category of data they contain or in EHS Sub module where they are used like i) Substances ii) Agent (Hazard) iii) Dangerous Goods Data iv) Waste Code.

Substance database contains header information and position data – often called value assignment information containing actual property information. For EH&S to work and function, these data needs to be created, used and updated at a regular intervels of time. It is possible to crate and update specificaiton information in SAP EHS, while for automated updating of the Specification database, 3rd party sources are used. The tools for updating the specification can be EH&S Expert - Open Content Connector – which uses xml format for updating the specification database – which will be covered separately in other session.

Specficiation database is closely linked as a specification model – which is related to Product Structure which we want to map into SAP EHS and at times its useful to sub – divide the broad specification category into small components to handle the data appropriately. For example It makes sense to separate Substance Specification into different Types based on exact piece of information they contain like Real Substances, Listed Substances, Un Listed Substances etc.

To create a specification in SAP EH&S access the T – Code, CG02BD, if you want to specifically create a specification database then CG02 (product Safety), CBIH92 (Industrial Hygiene and Safety), WAO02 (Waste Management).

Missing Value assignments under property tree

Q; The Property Density refers to Class SAP_EHS_1013_005

This class has following characteristics if I see it under CL03

SAP_EHS_1013_005_PREC
SAP_EHS_1013_005 _VALUE
SAP_EHS_1013_005_EC_TEMP_PREC
SAP_EHS_1013_005_EC_TEMP
SAP_EHS_1013_005_PRESSURE_PREC
SAP_EHS_1013_005_EC_PRESSURE
SAP_EHS_1013_005_METHOD
SAP_EHS_1013_005_GLP
SAP_EHS_1013_005_REMARK

When I go to IMG under SET UP TABLE BASED VALUE ASSIGNMENT is completely blank in my ECC version, the characteristics are not loaded. If I continue manually loading these characteristics in table it will take days as there would be countless characteristics for all properties.......under property tree provided by SAP.

What am I missing. Does Standard Table comes BLANK

Ans:

What I understood by your question is that under the property tree you are seeing the Value assignment node but actually when you try to access the value assignments it is not showing as these are not yet set up under Specify value assignments under specification database structure.

You can either create individual values manually or create them automatically. You go to table based value assignments and execute without entering any information under the options, then system will create values for the class with node properties.

Before doing that adopt standard Specification Database using from reference client 000 using " Adopt Standard specification database"

Thanks
